Coach is one of only 3 USCF Level III Certified Professional Chess Coaches in Texas, with 20 years classroom teaching experience, he is the lead coach of the award winning Knights, a member of Houston ISD Superintendent’s Parental Engagement Committee, Houston ISD Southeast District Teacher of the Year, Certified High School Teacher of the Year, Teach Like a Champion Lead Teacher, Who’s Who in America’s Teachers, HAABSE Winner, HISD South East District Teacher of the Year, Elizabeth Brand Memorial Scholar Teacher of the Year, Houston Rocket’s Teacher of the Game and a plethora of others. Robert A. Bartel (Bob) with 40 plus years chess experience. A great journalist and editor of The North Channel News, Bob is also a chess coach with and incredible passion for teaching chess. Master Karthik Ramachandran


The Chess Academy welcomes “Coach K” Master Karthik Ramachandran, awesome chess player and even nicer person. One of the smartest guys on the planet. Karthik Ramachandran, Business Honors major at The University of Texas carries a triple major and 3.9 GPA with ease. A phenomenal chess player, 2222, simply dominated the under 21 division at The US Jr. Open 2012 and earned the title, Master by crushing the competition. With six masters in the field Karthik, who entered the event with a 2157 rating, finished with a perfect 6-0 score including a 5th Round victory over top-seed Adarsh Jayakumar (2372) and a 6th Round win against NM Jonathan Chiang (2235).
